Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page just needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in regular Search. Even then, being picked as a supporting link is never guaranteed.

That single fact rules out most of what gets sold as an "AI Overview optimization" service. Below is what Google has actually published, not what sounds plausible.

What "query fan-out" means

Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as using a technique it calls query fan-out: the system issues multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources while it builds a response. In plain words, your page does not need to answer the exact words someone typed. It needs to be a strong answer to one of the related questions the system generates along the way, which is part of why AI Overviews can cite a wider and more varied set of pages than a single classic search result page does.

What Google says does NOT help

Google is specific about this, because so many businesses are being sold the opposite. You do not need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There is also no special schema.org structured data required beyond what you would already use for good SEO. If a vendor is pitching a proprietary "AI Overview file" or a schema type that only exists for AI visibility, that claim is not supported by anything Google has published.

What Google says still matters

Google's own advice is to treat the fundamentals seriously, because AI features pull from the same index as classic Search. The practices it lists are not new:

  • Crawlability. Allow crawling in robots.txt, and check that your CDN or hosting setup is not silently blocking Google.
  • Internal links. Pages that are easy to find from other pages on your site are easier for Google to find and understand.
  • Page experience. A page that loads reliably and is usable on mobile remains part of the baseline.
  • Text content. Important information needs to exist in text form, not only inside an image or a video.
  • Structured data that matches the page. Google is explicit that structured data should match the visible text on the page, not describe something the page does not actually say.
  • Current business information. Keeping your Business Profile and any Merchant Center feed up to date is on Google's own list.

None of this is specific to AI. It is the same groundwork that has supported classic search rankings for years, which is consistent with Google's own framing: the fundamentals remain relevant for AI features in Search.

For local businesses: what Google says about local results

Google has not published a separate ranking formula for AI Overviews. What it has published, in detail, is how local results in Maps and the local pack are decided, and that guidance is worth knowing because local queries are exactly where AI features show up most for small businesses. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence.

  • Relevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone searched for.
  • Distance is how far each business is from the person searching.
  • Prominence (Google also uses the word popularity) is how well known a business is, based partly on how many sites link to it and how many reviews it has. Google states plainly that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.

Treat this as what it is: Google's published guidance on local results, not a confirmed list of AI Overview ranking factors. Google also states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. For the full walkthrough of turning this into action, see how to get your local business into Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which covers the how-to side of this. This post is about how Google decides; that one is about what to actually do.

How to see AI Overview traffic in Search Console

There is no separate AI Overview report. Google includes this traffic in the regular Performance report, under the Web search type, mixed in with classic search impressions and clicks. A sudden shift in impressions without a matching shift in average position can be a sign that AI features are changing how your pages get seen, but Search Console will not label it for you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special markup or an AI text file to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says you do not need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features, and there is no special schema.org structured data required.

Is appearing in AI Overviews the same as being indexed by Google?

Being indexed is required but not enough on its own. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and even then inclusion as a supporting link is never guaranteed.

Are local ranking factors like reviews the same as AI Overview ranking factors?

Not exactly. Relevance, distance and prominence are what Google publishes about local results in Maps and the local pack. Google has not published a separate ranking formula for AI Overviews, so the honest answer is that these are the local signals Google talks about, not a confirmed AI Overview formula.

Can I see AI Overview traffic separately in Search Console?

Not as its own row. Google includes AI Overview and AI Mode traffic in the overall Performance report under the Web search type, alongside classic search traffic.
