What is Answer Engine Optimization?
Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring a business's
content, entity data and technical signals so AI assistants can verify the business
and name it inside a generated answer. The unit of success is a mention, not a click.
It borrows most of its technical foundation from SEO. Crawlability, page speed, clean
markup and structured data all serve both. What AEO adds is entity clarity and
quotable structure: making it unambiguous what you are, where you operate, who you
serve and what conditions you satisfy, and stating those facts in sentences a model
can lift without having to interpret them.
The practical difference shows up in how you write. SEO content is built to be found
and then read by a person. AEO content is built to be found and then extracted by a
machine, which means the answer goes first and the context goes second.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO and GEO describe the same work from two angles, and in practice most people use
the terms interchangeably. Answer Engine Optimization focuses on being the source an
engine cites. Generative Engine Optimization, a term introduced in a 2023 paper from
researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech and the Allen Institute for AI, focuses on how
a generative model selects and synthesizes sources while composing an answer.
Where the framings genuinely diverge is on a distinction worth understanding. A
source can be listed in an engine's citations without being named in the paragraph
the user actually reads, and the reverse also happens. Being cited and being
recommended are two separate outcomes.
The tactics overlap almost entirely regardless of which term you use: entity clarity,
structured data, third party corroboration, and content that states its answer
plainly. If a consultant tells you GEO requires a different budget line from AEO, ask
them to name one tactic that appears in one and not the other.

Is AEO the same as SEO?
No, though they share most of their technical foundation. SEO optimizes for a
position in a ranked list of links, where success is a click. AEO optimizes for being
named inside a generated answer, where there is often no click at all and success is
a mention.
The overlap is larger than the marketing around either term suggests. A site that is
fast, crawlable, well structured and factually clear does better at both. Almost
nothing in AEO requires trading away a Google ranking.
Where they part company is emphasis. SEO rewards depth and topical coverage across
many pages. AEO rewards precision on a small number of facts: what you are, where you
are, who you serve, what you cost. A model needs those resolved before it can name
you, and no amount of content volume substitutes for them.
Crawling
Does ChatGPT actually read my website?
Yes, through two separate mechanisms that get confused constantly. The model was
trained on a snapshot of the web that is months or years old, and your site may or
may not be in it. Separately, when a user asks something current, the assistant can
fetch live pages during the conversation.
Both paths matter and they move on completely different clocks. The training snapshot
is why consistent, long standing information about your business pays off slowly. The
live fetch is why your robots.txt, your server response times and whether your
content requires JavaScript to render decide whether you are usable in the moment.
Blocking the AI crawlers removes you from the second path entirely. GPTBot handles
training, OAI-SearchBot handles the search index, and ChatGPT-User handles live
fetches during a conversation. Blocking any of the three has a different consequence,
and most sites that block them did so by accident through a security plugin default.
Schema
Which structured data actually matters for AI visibility?
Start with Organization or LocalBusiness, and fill it in properly rather than
minimally. The sameAs array pointing at your verified profiles elsewhere does more
work than almost anything else in the file, because it is how a model confirms that
the business on your site and the business in a directory are one entity rather than
two.
After that, in order: FAQPage for questions you genuinely answer, Service or Product
for what you sell, and Person for the individuals behind the business if you work in
a credential driven field.
Skip the rest. Marking up everything available does not help, and schema that
contradicts your visible page content actively hurts. A model that finds a mismatch
between your markup and your copy has been given a reason to distrust both.
Diagnosis
Why does AI name my competitor and not me?
Usually one of four reasons. They are described more consistently than you are across
the sources the model trusts. They have third party coverage you do not. Their site
states the qualifying facts in plain text while yours implies them. Or they are
simply older, with a longer trail of consistent references behind them.
The useful diagnostic is to ask the assistant directly why it recommended them. The
reasoning it returns is not literally how it decided, and you should not treat it as
such. But it reliably reveals which attributes the model considers relevant to that
question, and that list is your work order.
Run the same prompt three or four times in fresh sessions before drawing a
conclusion. Answers vary between runs, and being absent once is noise rather than
evidence.
Local
Does my Google Business Profile affect AI answers?
Indirectly and significantly. Google AI Overviews draws on the local index your
profile feeds, which makes it close to a direct input there. For ChatGPT and
Perplexity the profile matters because it is one of the most widely mirrored
descriptions of your business on the web, which makes it a strong consistency anchor.
The version of your name, address and category sitting in that profile tends to
propagate outward into directories and aggregators. If it disagrees with your
website, you have handed every model a reason to treat your business as two uncertain
entities instead of one confident one.
A related warning: creating profiles for cities where you have no address, using a
virtual office or a mailbox, violates Google's guidelines and the resulting
suspension lands on your real profile too. It is not worth it.
Measurement
How do I track whether AI mentions my business?
Manually first, and it is less painful than it sounds. Write down twenty to forty
questions a real buyer would ask. Run them across the assistants on a fixed schedule,
from a clean session, and record whether you were named, what was said about you, and
which sources were cited. That transcript is your baseline, and it is more honest
than any tool currently on the market.
Record the date, the exact prompt wording and the market alongside each result. One
answer is a snapshot. A repeated set of runs is the only thing that tells you whether
visibility is improving or drifting.
In analytics, watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and
gemini.google.com. Volumes are small compared with search, but the intent is
unusually high, because the person arrived already holding a recommendation.
Content
Will publishing more content get me cited faster?
Not on its own, and past a certain volume it reverses. Answer engines are selecting a
source to quote, which is a judgement about reliability rather than quantity. A site
with fifteen genuinely useful pages is a safer thing to cite than one with four
hundred that mostly repeat each other.
What does move the needle is answering a question nobody else in your category has
answered properly, in your own words, with specifics only you have. One page like
that outperforms a quarter of generic publishing.
Google's scaled content abuse policy is worth reading alongside this. It targets
content produced at volume primarily to manipulate rankings, regardless of whether a
person or a model wrote it. The trigger is purpose and quality, not posts per week.
Content
How do I write a page an AI will quote?
Put the complete answer in the first sentence of the section, then explain it. Models
extract passages, not pages, and a passage that only makes sense with three
paragraphs of preceding context will not survive extraction.
Four habits do most of the work. State facts as facts rather than implying them, so
"we accept Blue Cross, Aetna and Cigna" instead of a logo strip. Use headings that
match the question a person would type. Keep each answer self contained so it reads
correctly when lifted alone. And put numbers, dates and named entities in the text
rather than in an image.
The counterintuitive part is that this makes the page better for humans too. The
formats that survive extraction are the same formats a person scanning for an answer
prefers.
Timelines
How long before any of this shows up?
Live retrieval changes can appear within days, because the assistant is reading your
page at the moment it answers. Fixes to crawlability, page structure and stated facts
fall into this bucket, which is why they come first in every engagement.
Anything depending on the model's internal picture of your business moves on a slower
clock, roughly three to six months, because it depends on new references accumulating
across the wider web and on models refreshing what they have indexed.
Anyone quoting you a faster number for that second half is guessing. The honest
version is that half the work can show results this month and half of it cannot, and
a good plan sequences the fast half first so you have something to look at while the
slow half compounds.
Hiring
What should I ask an AEO consultant before hiring one?
Ask them to show you a prompt transcript from a real engagement, with the dates on
it. Anyone doing this work properly has one, and anyone who cannot produce one is
selling a theory.
Then ask four things. What happens to the work if we stop, and does any of it switch
off. What is the minimum term. What will you refuse to do. And what does the monthly
update contain, specifically, because "reporting" and "proof" are different products.
Be careful with anyone quoting a guaranteed position or a percentage lift in AI
mentions. Nobody controls what a model outputs, the outputs vary between runs, and a
guarantee in this market is either a misunderstanding of the mechanism or a
deliberate one.
